Heat Pump Troubleshooting Guide
Malfunctioning heat pumps can make you uncomfortable and frustrated, but there’s no need to stay that way. Even if you’re no pro, Simpson Air has a few tips that may get your unit up and running again.
For heat pumps that won’t provide heat:
- First, make sure the thermostat is set correctly.
- Ensure the main power is flowing.
- Make sure no fuses are blown.
- Check the electrical panel for tripped circuit breakers. If you find any, flip them on. If they continue to trip it’s probably an electrical problem and you should call en electrician.
- Check the filters. Are they clogged?
- Check the blower. Is it running?
- If everything seems to be all right but the system still won’t heat, call Simpson Air.
Heat pumps that are cycling off and on too often:
- The issue may be the thermostat. Check the temperature settings, and if they seem correct but the unit still cycles on and off too often, give us a call.
Units with blowers that run continuously:
- Check the thermostat first to ensure the “fan” switch is set to “off” or “auto.”
- If it already is, the issue may be the limit switch, which prevents the equipment from getting overheated. If the limit switch needs to be adjusted it’s best to call a professional.
Heat pumps that must be restarted in extremely low temperatures:
- Does your unit have a “system selector switch?” Check your owner’s manual. If it does, flip it to “emergency heat.” After six hours, flip it back again.
Units with noisy air handlers:
- Squealing or grinding sounds are usually bad. The motor may have worn bearings. Turn the unit off and call a professional.
- Rattling could simply mean one or more parts aren’t secured tightly. Tighten the panels, and check for loose parts in the air handler. If you can’t see a problem, give us a call for service.
These are just a few issues heat pumps can encounter. If your trouble isn’t solved here, call Simpson Air. We’ll get your system running like new to keep you comfortable!
