Your Fans And Air Conditioner: Better Together Than By Themselves In Your Tampa Bay Home
With summer fast approaching, you’re probably thinking about your air conditioning and how you can get the most from it. Having regular tune-ups, replacing the filter and making sure that your home is airtight can go a long way toward maximizing the efficiency of your air conditioning. But did you know that you can keep your cooling bills even lower by using your air conditioning in tandem with ceiling fans?
How it works
A fan creates a breeze over your skin, making you feel cooler and more comfortable. This is called the wind chill effect. It can allow you to turn up your air conditioner’s thermostat by about 4 degrees or even more. When it’s just warm outside but not really hot, you may not even need your air conditioner. The fan can provide sufficient cooling.
Room and fan dimensions
A ceiling fan works best in a room with a ceiling that’s at least 8 feet high. For optimum efficiency, the blades should be 7 to 10 feet above the floor. They should be at least 8 inches, but no more than 12 inches, from the ceiling. In addition, the blades should be at least 18 inches from the walls.
Large fans with wide blades are more effective than small fansat moving significant amounts of air. A fan that’s 36 to 44 inches in diameter can cool a 14-by-16-foot room. A 52-inch or larger fan should be used in a bigger room. Use more than one fan in a room that’s long and narrow.
Operating your fan
When you’re choosing your fan, try to check its noise level and look for the Energy Star label, which helps to ensure its efficiency. Once your fan is installed, use it only when you’re in the room. You don’t need to create a wind chill effect if no one is in the room.
When used in concert, your fan and air conditioner offer both comfort and savings. For more information about your summertime home comfort, contact Simpson Air in Tampa. We’re your air conditioning specialists.
